And Now…Ladies & Gentlemen, the “WORST WEBSITE AWARD” goes to…..!! yes.. Indian railways … (background sound clap..clap..clap)
Today, one of my friends called me up, he wated to know the train inquiry phone number… naturally i told him dial 131.. maybe even 1330.. then he said “nahi yaar, my MTNL phone is not working and i need a number which i can dial via cell phone”. I had no answer to this, i don’t think the Indian railways have such a number and even if they do then i am sure it only know to a few select VVIP’s who don’t travel via the train in the first place. 😉
So i took upon this challenge to find the numbers myself. I wanted to prove that the Indian Railways is no joke, after all it’s one of the world largest rail networks.
I typed “Indian railways” on Google and click on the very first website on the search results, which was www.indianrail.gov.in
I searched around for 15 min but could not find the contact numbers… not even the 131 numbers.. there is nothing like a “Contact Us” button on the first page. Just so you know the gravity of the situation, a normal internet user gives only 5 sec to a website before he/she pushes the back button if they do not find what they are looking for. 5 sec???? I gave them 15 min… thats like a zillion times more than 5 sec.
If you want to know which company designed the website.. it’s CHRIS “Centre for Railways Information System”, which is an organization under Ministry of Railways… no wonder their website is just as bad a the Indian Railways.
Maybe Juxtconsult should do a website usability report on Indian Railways website rather than doing meaningless studies on websites like simplymarry.com
If you or anyone you know, happens to have the secret phone inquiry numbers, i urge you in all good faith to write the numbers in the comment box below so that we can all benefit from it.
Dear, I had the same question but got the answer myself, use the area code before calling these special numbers.
E.g. if you want to call Delhi railway station, dial 011-131, for Mumbai call 022-131.

No wonder where Lalu and his Railway is making so much money??? Today I tried purchasing an online ticket using my citibank gateway through IRCTC.CO.IN. After filling all the details….the gateway hung and the transaction did not complete…I checked my citibank account online immediately…as thought the amout of ticket was already deducted, but there was no ticket under Booked Tickets in IRCTC.CO.IN

Laloo ji instead of declaring new trains, declare how many trains you can run in time, every year have a target to run few trains in time and reduce crime in the train. Today I came with atrain whose departure train was 17.20 but the Guard was missing till 18.10, Why bonus for 70 days they should also be garlanded too after all laloo Bhai is there for them.
i tried 131 with area code,, wow, within 3 rings someone picked up and answered it is 139 for PNR status,,
and guess what,, 139 with area code,, not at all connecting,,
then i tried 135 with area code,, now thats the right no, automatic service system.. got the status,,
but the million dollar question is why that guy told 139????
please dial the all india number 139
139 is the correct number !
139 is enquiry number , those who do not know are not frequent train travels -truly –
Laloo Ji cannot be criticised for this ! why would he be held responsible for internet misinformation / gaffes or inquiry numbers !! as if he is to board every train and check the passenger amneties – he’s larger than life already that why people need a desire to connect with him –

I was having a confirm ticket from Agra Cantt to Chennai by Rajdhani Express.By 1745 hrs i enquired about the coach position for A2 since it was not displyed on coach position electronic boards. i was told that it is 3rd from Train Engine so i reached the place where the coach was suppose to stop. to my surprise the train arrived and and i fin AC 3 tier coached and when i asked cooli porters they told me Shab it will be at the rear end. So i Run towards rear end and when i reached in the middle the Engine whistled and Guard waved off the flag and the train started moving so i hurryly boarded in the pantry and latter reached in my coach. thanks to the man who manned the enquiry counter.
the same thing happed when i boarded the Himsagar express- and askeed the coach position at Agra Cantt. This time also the coach position was not displayed and the INFORMATION CENTER was able to tell about correct coach position. when i asked the reply was that the train starts from DELHI and does not stop at Mathura so we are not able to get coach position and reply U correctly. I dont understand when FOIS and COIS systems are installed at Duty station Manager Office and the Train Clerks are Taking Coach numbers train Compositions and other Positions round the clock, why the it can’t be shared with Information Center to Guide Travelling Public.
So think Coolie Porters are better serving Public by giving correct information then the TTEs/ TCs sitting with Black Coact and Brown Ties. They do not want to take risk or any pain to Guide Public from their hard they are Getting Salary.

one year as many passangers of the route BHIWANI-CHARKHI DADRI-JHRLI-KOSLI-JATUSANA firstly go to the REWARI railway station and got the another train after the couple of hours passing on the station.This is my humble request to HON’BLE RAILWAY MINISTER SHRI LALU PRASADYADAV to start a train from BHIWANI JN. via REWARI to NEW DELHI.He may make a train to extend upto NEW DELHI.Thank You.YOGESH YADAV.
India has so much of area still not covered by IR network,so many towns not having Railway Stations.With Shri Laluji boasting of achievement with every reduction in fares(Forget: converting every second express train in SUPERFAST one,thus pickpocketing the passenger by 3 to 5 percent!)we should forgive the Railways for not putting new lines for vigin areas.How about handing over these areas to Private Sector on BOT/BOLT basis.May be in few years we will have almost entire India connected by rail.When will we start thinking out of the box………..??????

I have not seen such a good site which has so many features in a single page. The better way to search Indian trains looks great and it open fast, no pop-up, user friendly. Every information in a single page. This concept is good and some of the features like calendar, train running day has not come in a single website in this reviews. the most important features i have seen in this site that if the user does not know the station code then also he can see all the trains and it is only website which have a drop menu box for the important station from where you can choose the station name and also it has a date calendar from you can choose the date and it show the running day of the train so that you can know which day of the week this train is running. the other most important feature I have seen in this website that it show the train which does not have the reservation coach for the benefit of the user and they are showing the passenger train also which is also not available in any website. This site will enable the users to search train route and compare fares of most of the trains in India.
Indian rail is the most worst organisation in the world,as even they don’t have any customer complain box or any enquiry column on their web site, and they don’t have any perticular station phone nos. to solve customer complains. I bookd my bike from my home town to Mathura on 20th august and still it is not delivered yet, on 13th september. I ask many times at Mathura station luggage department and also try to contact station master but they don’t even try to reply properly.Then i talk to deputy station master of Mathura station(MTJ) then i am surprised by his reply he told “i can’t help you why shoud i help you?” then i have to remind him that i am your customer i use your services and even i enquiry for my vehicle for almost eight times but still they have the same reply we are serching for your vehicle. Even at my home town at the time of packing my vehicle the luggage clear take bribe of Rs.235/- so that’s why we called MERA BHARAT MAHAN 100 MAI SE 99 BAIMAN (CORRUPT),No wonder why people still want to leave India as soon as they become graduates…

As per the automatic call alert i dialed 011139 no. is busy n if it rings no one reply shame on Indian railways its really shame to call it as indian railways. untill and unless Mr. laloo will think nothing can be changed and defnitely ubtil the necks of the people siting at these calls and staion authorities and thrown out we can never be proud to be indian railway coustomer. At new delhi station no one is their to assist the passanger. Worst is at Old Delhi and Hazzard nizzamudin. Please take care of us we r spending the money. Useless Indian Railway and useless indian authorities at stations and security too

I welcome your decision to give job in Railways to coolies. But I think you had not applied your mind regarding difficulties being faced by passangers due to this decision.
On Dated: 2-11-2008, my son-in-law was travelling from Ambala Cantt to Poona. Only one coolie was available at the boarding point. My son-in-law was having one fractured arm and my daughter was having her newly born child with her. The coolie was charging Rs. 100/- from every passanger to shift their lugage and baggage from one plateform to another but he was not ready to put them inside the compartment.How much difficulty they faced even after payment of Rs.100/- to the coolie I can not express.
This is one example that how much difficulty passangers are being faced due to your decision, and facing blackmailing by coolies which are very short in numbers almost at all the stations.
You are therefore requested to kindly look into the matter to provide sufficient coolies on the plateforms.
I am a regular passenger. I am that lucky passenger who has to stay in paltform 3-4 hrs everyday becoz I pay money to Railway to hear in a a shame less tone “Yatriyo ko Asubidha hetu Khed hey” Unhe hamrey asubidha hetu Rona Aata hey ishliye ki yatriyo ko taklif hoti hey. Hur train Late Lalu bechrey kya karenge?? Becharey time table to Print karwa diya hey taki log jaan sake Train kitni late chal rahi hey. Fir paise dekar platform mey nahi rahi to kya ghar rahey?? this is with reference to the written examination for railway selection was taken on 23/11/08 at St columbus inter college gomti nagar.lucknow .i wish to inform you that the teachers were paid Rs 350/-each by the railway authorities present at the examination center but soon after the railway staff left the premises the college authorities including Principal and Manager are forcing us to part Rs 150/- each with them so i wish to inform you that if railways will not take this issue seriously we will be forced to bycott or will not take that next examination scheduled on 7/12/08

He has make railway in profit, but in making this profit he forgot some this and it is service. service is the 1st motto of all public sector Industeries and railway comes in this sector. Today every one know the value of time but not the railway. Railway charge the ticket of Express train but it take more time then the local, becouse now the Goods train are being given more preferance then the Passenger Train and the Goods Train will run in front of passenger train and it will not be done siding..becouse of this reason Passenger train will run slow and will become late…I am doing up down from Ankleshwar to Baroda and i know how much time we spend in travelling by becoming mantelly tourcher by the management of railway..
it so happens that i am surfing through the net here at the pune station comesum, and to while away my time i happened to read the this blog page. i dont wish to offend anyone, but i am deeply depressed at having read certain comments agaist a choosen politician in our democracy. we may criticize all we want, but that is solely because we blind ourseleves. the train enquiry number is too small a issue for people to be wasting time in writing about. i dont wish to waste my time so i will leave you with facts for arguments. the average delay of trains due to avoidable reasons has gone down by 50%, facilities like linked book stores( you can buy a book at any station and return it at any other, and get half the price of the book back, even if it gets torn. its true.) if one opened there eyes a little more, they would notice that all personnel working at the station now a days carry an id, and our in their respected uniforms, even the chai walas. and so on and so forth. please dont reply by stating exceptional instances of stations where these things are not there. for i speak with reference to major junctions and stations, the point is improvement is there, and its only a matter of time before it spreads. the least we could do would be to acknowledge than to blame.

I hereby bring forward one of the biggest problems faced by all Indian train passengers . Important trains stop hardly for 2 to 5 minutes on big stations like Agra , Ajmer etc . Without knowing the coach position , how can a family board the train ? Will our railway officials think about this ? If solved …it will be historic , as most of us will not miss our trains because of searching booked coaches.
Railways are doing fairly well, but can I ask, why the time table for local trains, AMU/EMU trains, passenger trains with in NCR and elsewhere, as well as Northern railways/mini time table is not being published and made available to the public? Even the railway enquiry does not give info of all such trains. It is bad and immediate action should be taken.

from us & terrified us not to disclose it in st. premises or face dreaded consequence. we were in haste to attain a pt.
Although we approach R P F & T T C in gate to know the genuineness’ & integrity of these unlawful persons ,
but with little result . Please do something either by regularly deploying vigilance squad or suspending these
moist ,terrorist.&anti-social like people from duty or if fake from entering Howrah Rl. ST.So as to restore faith & law
& Order in st . failling which the great reputation of S.E. Railway will detoriate greatly.

No complaints will be heard my friend it is under Bihar Minister they dont hear, jiska danda uska Bhainsa. Danda Ligiye sab koyi sunega. I have not seen such an arrogant Department. Minister only declares Bonus for the Employee. There is no competetion all are bound to travel be Indian railway so profit is sure. Travel ticketless as in Bihar. snatching is not regular, it is at times. Earn hundred time loose once no harm.
Morvi is a developing city.trafic beetween morvi and Rajkot is too much.if railway want to do profit start intercity. all infrastructure avilable.

this summer i made an all – india tour , especially covering the states of himachal , j & k and uttrakhand . For this i had to travel by more than 14 indian trains . My maximum journey were by ac – 1 and ac – 2 only . Unfortunately , i got my wife’s ticket booked by e-ticket separately for the n.delhi – howrah rajdhani in ac- 1 . Mistakenly , i could not take her any i-card mentioned in the ticket . It was a mistake from my side. On getting down at the howrah station on june 15th 2009 , the t.c. in-charge stopped me at the main exit gate . After all negotiations he did not behave properly with us , and fined rs. 2500 , without giving any receipt . At the same time he misbehaved with my wife and me .
dear railway managers , this is a common site at the howrah station . Please co-operate with the railway passengers. I paid the railway more than rs. 80000/- in this 2009 trip and yet the railway misbehaved sorrowily with me and my wife . Shame on such behaviour on part of indian railway .

The railway inquiry is integrated, and can be accessed at 139 from landline, or the STD code and the 139 railway number called together from a cellphone.
Regarding the Indian Railway website, it is being served by powerful super computers, and I get to see the information real quick, despite using 256 Kbps Airtel broadband. You may not be getting the Internet fast, as you may be on some unreliable ISP providing a few kbps speed!
Considering the railways caters to millions of Internet users at a time, and is one of the largest online booking website, inquiry site, the site should be simple. The present system is perfectly alright. I have never faced a single problem in the past 10 years or so I have used the railway site.
INDIAN RAILWAYS HAS A DUTY TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THEIR CONTACT NUMBERS IN VARIOUS STATIONS AND ENSURE THAT THEY ARE ATTENDED ALSO. OR ENSURE THAT ALL TRAINS RUNNING TIME AND PRESENT POSITION IS DISPLYED ON THEIR WEB SITE WHICH SHOULD BE UPDATED EVERY HALF AN HOUR STRICTLY.
MAINTAIN SEPERATE CONTERS FOR VERBAL ENQUIRIES AND ANSWERING (BY TELEPHONE) COUNTERS.
Can anybody suggest the indian railway enquiry no. to know if a particular train is running at the right time or is it late?
All India number is 033 139. Normally this IVS system works but the problem is information given by them is normally atleast 3 hrs. old.Therefore, if they say particular train is late by one hour , don,t sit at home, may be you miss the train because train made up half an hour during this 3 hr journey. Or reverse also can happen and the train is late 3 Hrs.
But the it is true that Enquiry no. of most of the rly stations never works and nobody bothers about this.
I have notices that for the last 1 year the platform tickets at New Delhi railway station are not being issued. There’s a hand written message printed on the counter informing the same. Does any body know whether its being done legally for some security reasons or just to supplement the income of some people???
Anyways it causes lots of trouble for senior citizens and the physically challenged ones.

Can You tell how many citizens of India use Flights? If they donot have money to purchase tickets for flights nor it lands at every place for ticketless travellers, why should any one will criticize aviation minister. As per you Lal Bahadur Shastri was at a fault to resign for the train accident for which he was not at all responsible. You forgot that people at the top is responsible for any fault at the lower level. We are not commenting Lalu but Railway ministry. It is only the name. It seems using his name has hurt you.
In my opinion Railway ministery should not be given to Bihar for Coming 10 years to rectify. It has became like Bihar as it was under Bihar ministers for majority of Time after independence. There is no law and order, corruption and crimes, Tickless travel are rampant particularly in Bihar.
Stoppages of Mail/Express shouldbe curbed and it should be only on merits not as per public demand. It is seen whenever there is arail roko a stoppage for express train is given. Themerit should be as under
1. Passenger/Local should stop at every station
2. If number of tickets sold is more than acertain level than only Express stain should be given stoppage.
3.If Number of tickets sold is more than the required number than only Mail/ Superfast passengers should stop.
Sttopages at all Stations Creates problem for ticket holders as only ticketless traveller enter into the coaches and also the sanctity of train being express is lost, because it runs only as a fast pasenger. I think if stoppages is lessened in Express trains Ticktless travel in these trains will reduce dramatically with improvement of travel time and comfort of reserved passengers

Whatever said and done I beleive that Indian railways is one of the most effeicinet syetems in teh world with over 4 million passengers baoridng it veryday, I have travelled many a time from mangalore to madras and madras to nellore with my husband in these trains many a times and I found the train working wonderfully well , I think Mamatha Banerjee is planning to increase trians and giving trians to private people I think that also would be a good idea Mamatha Banerjee I am sure like her predecesoor Laoo yadav would make this indian rialways a very good system I congargaulate all Indian railway staff and authorities for making these train servide a wonderful one Thank you Indian railways
1. Previously if one dials 139 without STd code it was not conneting
2. There are many train nos particularly local which are alpha numerical how to insert such train nos e:g 1JHSE,211SE, 3JS etc
i would love to see the indian railways changing the status of 9019 dehradun express from mumbai to dehradun in the following ways as 1 instead of 14 coaches add some coaches from april to june including AC coaches. please try to cut short some unwanted stops and shorten the long duration halts at some staions to shorten the journey time by atleast 4 to 6 hours or start a superfast train on the same route as uttaranchal is becoming a popular tourist destination it will benefit the railways and the passengers a lot kindly think on my reqest seriously for all THANK YOU
My family stay in Arunachal Pradesh. I wanted to make one request that the duration to book tatkal ticket should be increased from 2 days to atleast 3 or 4 days. Because it takes two days to reach Guwahati(Boading place of train) from remote places of Arunachal. So its getting very difficult for us plan our journey on tatkal basis.
I, therefore request you to kindly consider this request for easing the life of people leaving in remote places.
